Meet Juan Carlos

Growing up amidst the beauty and chaos of Bogotá—the capital of Colombia—shaped my artistic vision profoundly. The city's unique environment and complex society have left a lasting imprint on my creative work.  Relocating to Berlin, Germany 15 years ago confronted me with a stark contrast to my Latin American identity, both personally and artistically. This shift opened up new themes, perspectives, reflections, and visual elements that now inform my image-making practice.

Living outside my home country made me acutely aware of the many preconceived notions people from other regions hold about Latin America. The postcolonial European lens through which Latin American art is often viewed is not immune to stereotypes:  Drug trafficking, toxic masculinity, lush tropical landscapes, rampant violence, extreme poverty, and beauty queens are just a few of the recurring motifs found in vibrant imagery. Through my work, I invite viewers to reconsider these narrow portrayals and engage with the broader spectrum of contemporary art and global diversity.

By blending visual elements—often trapped in stereotypes—that represent the Latin American spirit, and specifically the Colombian experience, I aim to challenge expectations surrounding art and artists from this region. Technically, my practice combines collage, painting, drawing, and digital printing. I draw inspiration from classical art themes such as portraiture, landscape, and still life, and navigate a path that oscillates between figuration and abstraction, in pursuit of a distinctive formal language.
